Don't automatically reach for the stain remover.
Stain removers can cause premature soiling. This is because many products leave a sticky residue behind, which will attract dirt. In two weeks time you could end up with a dirty patch where the stain was. If you do have to resort to using a stain remover, use it sparingly. Then once you have removed the stain, you have to then remove the stain remover. The less stain remover you have used the easier it is. The best method of removing it is by rinsing with water and sucking it up with a vacuum cleaner design to suck up liquids.
Here's what to do.
The key to successful stain removal is to act fast, especially with red wine, fruit juice, tea and coffee and definitely if it is a wool carpet. Mop up what you can with old towels, rags paper towels or what ever you have to hand. If you have a wet and dry vacuum cleaner all the better.
Now dilute the remaining stain with water and try not to over-wet the carpet. Then mop up as before. (If the carpet has a hessian or jute backing, then you will only make the situation worse by over-wetting as it will cause browning. This is because the colour of the jute will wick up through the carpet pile. You may not notice the browning immediately as it takes time for the jute stain to wick up through the fibres.)
Now if the stain is gone, well done. If not, then you need to get professional help. Do not let the stain dry out. You can do this by placing a damp cloth or towel over the affected area until help arrives.
